The Tree of Ténéré

In most of the world, trees and thereby shade are abundant. However, shade is under-appreciated. When shade is rare, it can save a life.

In Niger’s Sahara desert stood a lone acacia tree, the Tree of Ténéré.

It was the only tree for 250 miles and its roots extended more than 100 feet into the sand to reach water. Yet the tree itself was a mere 10-feet tall.

For generations, it stood as a lighthouse or beacon guiding travelers (including animals) along a salt caravan route.

This tree was an oasis from the extreme heat and dryness of the desert.

Now, a Tree of Ténéré stands as an art exhibit in Dallas with 75,000 LED lights as leaves. It reminds us that even in the harshest conditions, with strong roots, one can flourish.
