Coach George Ravelin, who is in the Basketball Hall of Fame, was approached by the coach of the Dream Team, asking him to put together a practice team of college players to scrimmage the Dream Team.
Coach Ravelin recounted, "You had Magic, Bird, Barkley, Jordan – you name it. We only had eight players. The first night that we had the scrimmage, I think the NBA guys basically looked at us as this is just a scrimmage of college guys. They didn’t really take it as serious as we did. The college guys, we were all fired up. We scrimmaged for 37 minutes, and we actually beat them in the scrimmage. The word got out, and they were livid."
After the scrimmage, Larry Bird stayed to practice because he felt his shot was off.
George had his team manager stay back to drive Bird. "So he stayed and shot for an hour and 15 minutes straight. When he came to my room, he said, 'Coach, unbelievable. He just continually shot. He only took one water break. He was drenched head to toe.' He looked at me and he said, 'Coach, if Larry Bird is doing this, what should the average guy be doing?'”
Dreams don’t happen overnight.
They require practice, persistence, and time.
That’s how you make a Dream Team.
