Becoming a Camper
Walking into camp orientation, both daughters insisted upon holding my hand.
They refused to go anywhere without me.
As time passed, and with some encouragement, they became more and more comfortable and eventually, independent.
They let go.
Leaving the orientation, they walked on their own.
This little afternoon was a microcosm for parenting.
We show up holding their hands.
Then help them gain confidence and independence until they feel brave.
Finally, we let them walk their own way.
That’s when a parent becomes a happy camper.
